26. Mark Twain's house

Mark Twain, whose real name is Samuel Longhorn Clemens, grew up in Hartford, Connecticut. The home, with its asymmetrical window arrangement and an impressive sloping roof, is a beautiful example of Victorian Gothic Revival architecture.

The notorious author's father built the house on his wife's inheritance, but part of the family fled to Europe in 1891 due to poor financial management. His father made money by giving lectures to try to pay off the family's debts. After Mark Twain's sister died in the house, the rest of the family couldn't take it anymore and sold it. It is currently a public museum dedicated to the life and heritage of Mark Twain.
