13. Oak Alley Plantation
The US Antebellum South has a few more famous photos than the oak-lined walkway leading up to the Oak Alley Plantation. The historic sugarcane plantation, which locates on Vacherie, St. James Parish, Louisiana, is a famous sight on magazine covers and calendars, showcasing many of the classic features of Antebellum architecture from the oak trees themselves to the columned facade.
The home was built for one of the richest sugar men in the south, Valcour Aime. Indeed, the slave labor created much of the house and the riches of Aime, as his plantation was run entirely on slave farm labor. A slave on the estate was produced by a noted variety of grafted pecan trees.
