11. American Gothic House
Apart from Art Historians, few people probably know that the iconic farmhouse perched behind the creepy couple still stands comfortably in rural Iowa in American Gothic, right where it was when Grant Wood originally stumbled upon it when inspired by the establishment. Wood noticed the house on a drive, an Iowa native himself, and was struck by the strangeness of seeing classic Gothic architecture on a clapboard farmhouse.
Wood had only visited the house twice, which was twice in Eldon, Iowa. He finally completed the painting in his studio in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Throughout the years, numerous caretaker owners have leased the property, but many visitors still make the drive to see the famous front of the home in rural Wapello County.
