8. Hearst Castle
To serve as his private retreat, newspaper mogul William Randolph Hearst built this Julia Morgan-designed castle in San Simeon, California. Unfortunately, he never saw the project completed due to his poor health, and he left the 165-room estate in 1947. It is now a museum that is open to the general public.
